Mission Statement

McDonough Immigration Services stands with people on the front lines of oppression: queer and trans migrants, families torn apart by borders, and those resisting violence and persecution. Specializing in asylum, family-based immigration, citizenship, and humanitarian immigration pathways, we provide fierce, compassionate legal advocacy for clients navigating a deeply unequal immigration system. Grounded in equity and committed to systemic change, we partner with our clients to amplify their voices, defend their rights, and work toward a future where dignity and freedom of movement are realities for everyone. We fight every day for a world where no one is disposable and everyone belongs.

Based in New York City, Megan McDonough is an immigration attorney with over a decade of experience providing direct legal services to asylum seekers, refugees, and displaced people navigating complex protection systems in the United States and abroad.

Internationally, she has represented asylum seekers and refugees before the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Egypt and Southeast Asia, advancing refugee rights through legal aid, advocacy, and community-based protection.

In the United States, Megan has built and led legal teams supporting migrants through complex immigration processes, including asylum, family reunification, and humanitarian protection. Most recently, she worked with newly arrived migrants in New York City, assisting asylum seekers file their asylum applications and ensuring access information about the legal processes so they can navigate through the U.S. immigration system effectively.

While at the International Refugee Assistance Project, she assisted Afghan and Iraqi Special Immigrant Visa applicants who worked with the United States. She has helped families and individuals, including LGBTQ+ refugees and those in nontraditional marriages, reunite and access protection in the United States.

Her work is grounded in a deep, practical understanding of asylum and displacement, and in the belief that every person deserves dignity, fairness, and the freedom to move.
